Notes:

Blencathra is a stunning mountain standing high above the A66. The name Blencathra, popularised by Wainwright over the Ordnance Survey's ‘Saddleback’, is thought to derive from the old Cumbrian words for hill top and chair, in reference to its shape.

It consists of Slate and Mudstone and is some of the oldest rock in the Lake District, dating back to the Ordovician period of 495 to 465 million years ago.

Our walk starts from the beautiful village of Threkeld, starting with an exciting scramble up Halls Fell ridge and leading directly to the summit. From this high point we can then continue our walk over 5 Wainwrights: Blencathra, Mungrisdale Common, Bannerdale Crags, Bowscale Fell and finally Souther Fell, then heading back to our start location.

This grand day out involves over 19km distance and 1130m of height gain. This is an 8 hour day. However there are many points where this can be shortened if one chooses.

Who is it a good route for?

Anyone who wants a long, high level route in the fells. Taking a good number of Wainrights with some scrambling.

Wainwrights:

Blencathra, Mungrisdale Common, Bannerdale Crags, Bowscale Fell and Souther Fell
